If you follow a Mediterranean diet you increase your changes for a longer life. This study shows that the most important part is actually moderate amounts of alcohol; one to two small glasses of wine a day, followed by moderate amounts of meat as the second most important.

Obesity shortens your life. The severe health risks of obesity are now confirmed by scientific evidence. The Prospective Studies Collaboration investigated associations of BMI with overall and cause-specific mortality using long-term prospective follow-up of approximately 900,000 participants. The analysis shows that increasing body weight can shorten your life by several years.
Comparison of Weight-Loss Diets

The amount of weight loss after 2 years was similar in participants assigned to different diets. Most of the weight loss occurred in the first 6 months. After 12 months, all groups, on average, slowly regained body weight. Reported energy intakes and physical activity were similar among the diet groups. The participants who completed the study had a mean weight loss of 6.5 kg at 6 months, which corresponds to a reduction in daily energy intake of approximately 225 kcal.
