Don’t buy into Common Weight Loss Myths!
Are you letting these common weight loss myths undermining your weight loss and making it difficult.
People with weight problems seem to believe in myths about weight loss and food that people who are naturally thin don’t.
Starting to think as a non-overweight person is an important step.
There are so many weight loss theories and products out there. It’s easy to get confused and very tempting to believe in them.
What if they actually work, wouldn’t it be nice? But what are just weight loss myths and what is true?
Most Common Weight Loss MythsOverweight people like food more than thin people
On the contrary, thin people love food. They take their time and enjoy every moment. They eat want they want and avoid what they don’t want.
Overweight people tend to eat for many other reasons than just enjoying the food. Do you tend to eat more when you are upset? Food will not solve any problems and seeking fulfillment in food can stop you from finding it elsewhere.
What are you actually hungry for?
Losing weight is a matter of will power
Being overweight is a mix of many factors, cultural, genetic, social and metabolic, not a simple problem of willpower and lack of self control.
Today we are exposed and have easy access to delicious, high-fat foods. Only 30 years ago that was not the issue. We are also not as active today as we used to be, so exercise needs an effort, it doesn’t come naturally.
An important part of losing weight and keeping it off is a change of lifestyle. You will encounter challenges on your way to your ideal weight.
Will power alone will not help you overcome them. Commitment, an open state of mind and being compassionate with yourself will.
Skipping meals is a good way to lose weight
This is probably the most common weight loss myth. Skipping meals is the worst you can do.
Eating many small meals throughout the day will help you control your appetite. Studies show that people who skip breakfast and eat fewer times during the day tend to be heavier than people who eat a healthy breakfast and eat four to five times a day.
It’s easy to eat more than you need if you are very hungry. It takes up to 20 minutes before the satiety feeling sets in and if you are really hungry, you can eat a lot in 20 minutes.
Certain food or products can make you lose weight
No food can burn fat. Some foods may speed up your metabolism for a short time, but they do not cause weight loss.
Believing in the weight loss myth that food like grapefruit, celery or cabbage soup can burn fat is very tempting, but it will only delay your weight loss. Some natural or herbal weight loss products can even be harmful.
Don’t waste your time trying to find “magic” weight loss food or products; focus on what really matters, changing your lifestyle.
All carbohydrates are bad and will make you gain weight
Not all carbohydrates are equal, and the body uses carbohydrates to burn body fat, so you need them for weight loss.
What you should avoid is processed carbohydrates that are often high in sugar and white flour. Enjoy beans, whole grain, fruit and vegetables, which are low in calories as well.
Be aware of weight loss myths that exclude certain kinds of food.
Low-fat or fat-free means no calories
No it doesn’t!
"Low-fat" or "fat-free" products can actually contain more calories than the full-fat ones. Fat brings out the flavor in food and removing the fat means removing the flavor.
"Low-fat" or "fat-free" products may contain added sugar, flour, starch thickeners to improve flavor and texture after the fat is removed. And it’s tempting to allow yourself to eat more because it’s "low-fat", ending up with the same amount of calories or more as you would have eaten if you had a full-fat product.
Always check the Nutrition Facts on the package and don’t eat more than you would have if you had a full-fat product.
It runs in the family - it’s genetic
Believing that it’s because of your genes that you are overweight can be comforting.
Some people refuse to see that weight loss requires a commitment to a healthier lifestyle; it’s easier to depend on a theory that blames your body, rather than your own behavior for your weight.
Even if everybody else in your family is overweight you don’t have to be. What we inherit is attitudes towards food and living in general, not “fatty-genes”. Changing that attitude will help you lose weight. Check with a doctor if you think something is wrong with your metabolism.
It’s expensive to lose weight
It can be, but it doesn’t have to.
You don’t need fancy equipment or special food to lose weight. A lot of exercise is free, like walking, jogging, push ups etc. Unhealthy food is not free either, so just changing over to healthy alternatives will not affect your wallet.
Obesity causes many health problems, like heart diseases, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Curing them is not free. A healthy body is like money in the bank, it’s cheaper to be healthy than to be sick.
I’m young, I can lose weight later
Most people gain weight as they get older; the metabolism slows down making it harder to keep the weight off. Why spend more time being overweight?
Learning good habits from an early age makes it easier to stay slim. The best time to lose weight is now!
How many of these weight loss myths do you or have you believed in? Don’t buy into just anything because you desperately want to be slimmer. Be critical, question what you hear or read and educate yourself, do your own weight loss research. You are vulnerable and weight loss is a billion dollar industry. Spend your money where you will get the most value.
