Choosing Breakfast Smoothies
Starting your day with breakfast smoothies is an excellent idea, but there are a few things you might consider, especially when you want to lose weight.
What’s the sugar content? If your smoothie has a high sugar content it may give you sugar cravings later during the day. Sugar cravings are hard to resist and you may involuntarily eat more than you should and you will waste the health benefits of your smoothie. Always use fresh or frozen fruit for your smoothie, not preserved.
Is a smoothie enough?Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. Is a fruit smoothie enough to cover 20-25% of your total caloric intake?
Fruit is mostly carbohydrates, but to get the right energy balance of your meal you also need some protein and fat.
If you make your smoothie with milk or yoghurt you get some protein and also sugar, lactose. A good idea is to add a protein supplement to your smoothie to make sure you get the right amount of protein.
You still need fat even while you are losing weight and it’s better to use vegetable fat instead of animal fat. Since you will be using low-fat or fat-free yogurt or milk in your smoothie, try adding some almonds or walnuts, both good sources of fat.
Start by grating the almonds or walnuts in your blender and then add the rest of your smoothie ingredients.
Learning to make healthy, balanced smoothies for breakfast is a fast way of getting the nutrients you need to kick-start your day.
