The benefits of ginger root (well, it’s actually a rhizome, which is a part of the stem which grows underground), this odd looking spice, don’t stop at excellent flavor.



If you see weight loss as depriving yourself of food you like and being stuck with only boring stuff, think again. There are also spices like ginger to make every meal exciting and healthy.

Ginger is on the FDA’s (American Food and Drug Administration) list of foods "generally recognized as safe (GRAS)" and can be used as much as you like.

Did you know that ginger remedies are good for your digestive system and can actually cure diarrhoea and helps with gallstones?

Ginger ale and ginger beer is used in many countries as a stomach settler. (On the Greek island of Corfu, they have their own ginger beer called tsitsibira).

It’s also believed to lower cholesterol levels and decrease arthritis pain. If you get seasick, carsick or have morning sickness during your pregnancy, ginger is a safe remedy, and may even be safer than prescribed medicines.

Ginger tea is used in folk medicine as a cure for colds.

Benefits for Weight Loss

Ginger helps in expanding the blood vessels which increases your body heat. This makes your body burn more fat.

Don’t imagine a huge increase though, you can’t eat large amounts of food and just add some ginger to speed up the fat burning process enough to lose weight. It’s better to see ginger as a flavoring that can add interest to stir-fries and marinades.

As ginger stimulates circulation it also helps detoxify your body. Great health benefits and it also means less water retention.

Ginger is not in the category of superfoods, but definitely something you should consider adding more of in your diet to achieve better health and have more delicious meals.

The best way to enjoy ginger is to use the fresh variety. Peel it first then grate (shred) or finely slice of chop the gineer to use in recipes. You can also use dry, ground ginger, what ever you prefer.



A great way to get more ginger into your diet is by drinking ginger tea. Just take 4-5 slices of ginger and steep in boiling water. You can add a slice of lemon as well if you like. A perfect drink to waken your tastebuds first thing in the morning.
